Google Chrome OS – A web developer’s perspective
Julius Hermosura
Google has recently released its Chromium OS open source project to the public, but OS product availability is expected to be in the market by mid 2010.
Chromium OS is an operating system specifically designed for computer users, who are mostly engaged on the internet, as it is designed to work with web applications such as ymail, delicious, facebook, twitter, googlemaps, etc, etc…
Through this web applications, all of your daily desktop applications such as listening to music, sharing images, watching movies, emails, instant messaging, saving documents and even creating documents will now be made easily accessible and available via the internet. In any case you may need to access your files, you just have to plug-in your usb thumb drive and shortly your web browsers will show your files. Now, all you have to do is switch on your computer, be on the internet and your on the go in a matter of seconds.
So how do web developers comes in the picture? It is through these said Webapps, as they continuously evolve, change and develop. If Google will be successful in shifting this OS then expect web developers to thank them for being people indemand & indispensable.
This OS is very promising not only for being malware secured, but also it has the capacity to autofix itself upon reboot. Talking about saving you a lot of time managing your programs & updates.
Several software companies have also seen the potential of this OS in the future, indeed they have already took the initiative to start reproducing their desktop application to a web application. Even Microsoft have a webapp version of their MSOffice (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc…) for Chromium OS.
Now, in every good part of the story, there’s always a risk attached to it. Some of the risks that we felt this OS will face are:
- internet connectivity, there are still areas having trouble getting signals or public places with wifi unavailability
- internet speed, this is a strong factor when using webapp that deals with documents
- having hard time accepting this OS idea and being comfortable using it, as some would still prefer using their traditional desktop applications
- the availability of webapps, for there are still a limited number of webapps out there that could really substitute with the way we are computing today
One key factor we thought we leave this with….is time.

I know in the beta releases at least the Chrome browser caused some weird CSS issues for me in some of my desings – looked fine in FF and Safari. It appears to be fixed in the latest version for MacOSX though. I’ll be interested to see what new stuff they come up with to tie in.
