Facebook Statistics for Asia
Faye Foo
Today, I’ll share with you the Facebook Statistics for Asia as of Dec 2009, seeing how this social media channel is so popular in Indonesia, I’d home in particularly on this country and leave the rest for another day!
As of today, Facebook Indonesia tops the Asia list with an astounding 10,847,040 users aged 18 and above! And that, by far is a huge boost from the rest of the Asean countries! (but with that said, we have to also bear in mind the differences in populations as well, but regardless, can you imagine… 10 million?!?! Thats almost twice the entire population we have here in Singapore! Wow!)
Lets take a look at this graph:

By comparing just the figures between these 5 countries, you can already tell how social media savvy the Indonesians are!

Still not convinced, I took this research a step further and found out that Indonesia tops the entire WORLD as the fastest growing country by users! (let alone Asia)

You can see how in Year 2008 with barely 300k users, it grew 2997.2% to almost 6.5 million (July 2009) and nearing 11 million as of today (Dec 2009)!!!!!! (Now, I really am wondering the sudden significant hike! Aren’t you too?)

And finally, this table represents the figures of the 5 countries broken down in 4 different age groups!

We can clearly see how Indonesia leads the pack in terms of facebook users! My guess is, with the adoption of smartphones and cheap data plan on the rise for Indonesia, many users are accessing Facebook using their phones rather than the home PCs. Perhaps, marketers targeting Indonesia market should really consider Social Media Marketing as part of their marketing mix!

Hi!
Thanks for the interesting information!
I am from Indonesia, and yes, from these numbers you can say that Indonesians are very tech-savvy. but, one thing to also keep in mind is that Facebook’s growth is very high here because it suits Indonesian culture. Collectivity, society-centered, somewhat nosy, they like to see what others are doing (voyeurism), and slightly show-off-y.
So, yes, hence the high rise.

I thought you guys were into research, not guessing.
Everyone in Indonesia already knows it’s because of the high penetration of BlackBerry, and the Facebook app for BlackBerry.
