This week, having attended a few clients’ pitches, it occurred to me that everyone is asking for assurance on getting the number one spot. I can’t blame them especially with the current economic climate – managers are constantly pressured to deliver results to their bosses.  However, this also means that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) practitioners could find it easier to sell their services the easier way (in my opinion, the incorrect approach).  What I would term as going over to the “dark side”.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a process of publishing information and marketing it in a manner that Search Engines understand the information or content that is relevant to search queries” – Aaron Wall

I strongly thing that an  SEO company must be honest in their dealings with clients. Telling clients about the risks involved,  advising them with honesty on the pros and cons of launching a SEO campaign, being transparent with the techniques and tactics used on their website.

clickTRUE offers SEO consultation to clients in a fairly competitive way. I am saying this not because I belong to the clickTRUE team but because I am very happy with what our sales team are sharing with theinr clients – everything! We consider every campaign as one in which we build a relationship with our clients. My company has a Marketing Principle which we follow in doing our campaigns and on our personal life – “Be True to All”. Integrity is what clickTRUE is doing, in what we say, in what we do.

One of the first things we educate the client on is that SEO is really a long term process. There are no shortcuts. SEO is divided into two approaches – On-Page SEO and Off-Page. It is really hard to reach a good spot when a SEO company only employs one approach. As the saying goes, it takes two to tango. As for Off-Page SEO, I consider it the science of building good quality linkage data to showcase the quality, relevancy and authority of your website in the online space. Again, this takes significant time to execute. I see that some SEO companies go about link building solely by submitting links without considering the quality of the links – to them, volume and speed trumps everything else.

My honest advice then, as an SEO person:

For Service Providers - Be ethical in your approach. Show clients the pros and cons of each technique. Share information and impart knowledge. Collaborate with the client.

For Clients - Be upfront on your requirements. Communicate with the SEO vendor and make them an integral part of your business – they will be worth it.
