Me and the Evolution of Social Networking Sites
Faye Foo
I remember the days where I would religiously log into my Friendster account the minute Im online. Its like part of my Internet regime; friendster-email-msn-friendster. Yes, you get my point. It was just interesting and entertaining for me to see pictures of friends (especially those that werent based locally), and pictures of friend’s of friends. More often than not, I’d usually be amazed at the connections between friends or acquaintances I didnt know existed!
Everything was fine and dainty till I constantly heard the word “Facebook” repeatedly- not just by 1 but by many friends of mine! Facebook? Of course I had to see for myself what the hype was all about, so I readily signed up for an account and bam! Within a week, I had at least 10 emails notifying annoying me that I have been poked, punched, hugged, kissed and the list goes on! Guess what? Im not alone feeling fed up, both BBC and Guardian reported the same findings resulting in a drop of users!
This was not for long though, because those figures picked up as everyone joined the bandwagon; with the tagging of pictures and reading of live status, the concept was fresh and new, something that wasnt available with friendster. (now that I look at friendster after betraying them, they are indeed lagging behind in terms of page design and features! -it could be a biased view though!)
And today, these sites must pave the way for the up and coming Twitter! Although I must add, not many loyal facebook-ers have jump ship but I have, and Im loving it! I got really excited knowing that I could actually “follow” the tweets of very famous celebrities/people/news sources! (its like a 1-stop-center!)
Just to name afew- Ashton Kutcher, President Obama, Channel News Asia and even my daily source of gossip- E!online are tweetering! What more can you ask for, really? And because there’s that 140 word limit, my bosses do not have to worry about me spending too much time reading the latest tweets! Absolutely brilliant!
Now, lets just see how long it takes for Twitter to be the next Facebook or Friendster!
p/s: you must have at least done something right once you find your competitors following your way or thinking of moves to counter-attack!
Twitter 1 — Facebook 0
